The curriculum at Lovettsville Montessori School is based on teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori, who by observing the actions and interactions of young children, found that children in the first six years of life have a unique capacity to learn. She described this as the "absorbent mind". Children need space and time to explore, create and learn. It is the role of the adult to prepare a suitable environment for the young child, remove any obstacles that might hinder them, guide the children to the materials and to allow them to follow their interests.
The Montessori Method allows for independent and small group work, interaction between the children and for spontaneous and purposeful activities. The children spend each day on the different exercises that they have been presented. These exercises include practical life exercises, language work, an education of the senses, mathematics, geography, art and science. The children prepare and eat snack together. We read, sing and play outside everyday.
