Wakefield School's Early Childhood Center offers a nurturing, safe environment to help our youngest students develop a love of learning.
The co-curricular classes for the Early Childhood Center include Art, Music, World Languages, Physical Education, and Technology. Co-curricular classes complement and mirror what students are learning in their classrooms.
Young children are naturally inquisitive and enthusiastic, and the art classes for ECC students encourage those qualities. Through hands-on, colorful, and engaging activities, the progressive curriculum offers opportunities for experimentation in the four primary media: drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture/construction. Curricula is rooted in a spiral aspect of artistic learning allowing for continuing exposure to certain core concepts over several years.
Wakefield's ECC Curriculum also focuses on the development of social skills in the context of character education. Throughout the year in the ECC, the four cardinal virtues — prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude — are introduced. Each month a specific characteristic of a given virtue is discussed and explored in detail with each class to help the students see practical ways in which individuals can live these large ideals. These activities are led by a dedicated counselor. Being a good citizen in the classroom is emphasized every day through the Character Counts program!
