August 24th I go to the daycare to pick both boys up and I noticed while packaging my infants things that he had two bottles left for me to take home. You see, each morning we had to bring the amount of bottles the child would need throughout the day with the name of the child, the date, and how many ounces on masking tape and affix it to the bottle. At this point, I always carried in 4 bottles with 5 ounces each in them. At the time my baby was only 5 months old so he was not eating baby food yet. During a 9-hour period of being left at the daycare, he would usually have 3-4 of his bottles. At least 15-20 ounces. On this particular day, when I went to get the left-over bottles out of the fridge he still had two 5 oz bottles left, meaning he only had 10 ounces on that day. There was a stand in staff person at this time that had never worked with the infants because the two regular teachers were on vacation and the other was sick, I believe. When I noticed he only had the 10 oz I just made a comment that it was kind of strange that he only drank 10 oz the entire day. She told me he refused his other bottles. I just let it go and didn't think anything else of it.
August 25th I get to the daycare to pick both the boys up again. I always went into the infant room first to get the baby as it took a little longer to get everything packed up and him in his car seat. I get in the infant room and my baby is not in there. There are no babies in there and the lights are off. I am then told that my baby is in the 1-year old room. I open the fridge in the infant room to get the bottles for him like I do every day. Again, first thing I notice was two 5 oz. bottles again, left over. I was a bit irritated at this point because again, for the second day in a row my child has only had 10 ounces in a 9-hour period. I proceed to the one-year room to get him, when I walk in my baby was lying on the floor for anyone to be able to have access to him or for any of the one-year old kids to accidentally step on him. He was not a crawler at this time and should have never even been placed in that room with the older kids. Thankfully, he was not hurt. I did say something about the bottles this time and asked why he had not been fed his other bottles. She said he just wouldn't eat, he just refused. However, each day we would get a summary of the day-What time they ate, were changed, etc. These two particular days I didn't even get that. No paper stating he refused or that she even tried. I spoke with the acting manager at the time as the site director had already left (she left a couple days before for another job). The staff eventually said that she fed my kid all his bottles. She couldn't have because they came home with me on both days. I was told that I was not the only one to complain and was assured that staff would not be working with my infant son again.
August 31st I get to the daycare to pick the boys up. I go into the infant room to get the baby first. I go to get his lunch box (we put the bottles in there in the morning to take and put the bottles in the fridge). I noticed a taped-up paper waiting on me. I didn't open it yet. I get all the babies things together and then get my school ager. I open the letter once at home and low and behold it is an incident report and it is written by none other than the staff that wasn't supposed to be in the infant room (the person that didn't feed my baby for two days the week before and the person I was told would no longer be working with the infants.) Apparently, she had to be in there to relieve another staff person for lunch. On the incident report she said that my baby rolled over and bumped his head on the rocker. He had a red mark on his head. But, she did not follow proper procedures as I asked what should have been the correct action to take. The proper thing to do since it was a head bump was to notify acting manager, which I am told she did not, then to notify the parent, which she also did not do. We will get back to this in a moment as I have since found out more information.
September 7th while having dinner at home after picking the boys up from daycare, my school ager is bragging that he got to drink some peach tea at daycare. He is bragging because I restrict his sugar intake because it is generally just not good for you. He also has ADHD and I feel limiting his sugar helps with his hyperactivity. He knows we don't allow it but on very rare/special occasions so he was being funny by telling us this. After further questioning from him I found out that the same staff person that there have been Phin incidents with, is the same person who gave him peach tea. I wasn't too upset about it until he told me that it was purchased at a store and she had already opened it and drank from the bottle. She then gave my son the bottle to also drink out of and two of his friends. She then took it back and drank some more from the same bottle and then gave the bottle back to my son to have the rest.
September 8th I called the acting manager at the time to request a meeting with her that afternoon when myself and my Steve could be there. We discussed all incidents with her as I had already done at the time of the incidents. I asked had that particular staff been written up for any of the incidents and we were told no. I said since we have already been through issues and I requested that she not work with my child any longer and that hasn't done any good because she still worked with him more, then if she weren't fired I was pulling both of my kids. I told her I did not want to wait around for something extremely bad to happen to one of my kids or some else. I was told she would be contacting the regional director on that Monday to see what they could do since she had not been written up for any of the issues from before.
September 11th As I came in to drop Phin off I was told the staff person had quit. I thought, great! There shouldn't be any more issues.
September 19th I got a call from a concerned staff person that the ratio in the infant room was off. There were five babies to one staff. I decided right at that moment I was going to go get my baby before someone terrible happened. I called the regional director and told her of all the incidents as well as the ration being off and I wanted to pull both of my kids. She informed me that I was to give a two weeks’ notice. I told her I was absolutely not going to be penalized for two weeks because her staff and new director refuses to follow proper procedures and protocols. See, we are the type of parents that like to pay, in full. So, they were going to try to pro-rate the refund they owed me for us already paying through the end of the year. Thankfully, they did not try to fight me on it and I have since received my refund. Rightfully so!
September 26th While having a casual conversation with someone who also has/had a child at Rainbows End and was talking about switching daycare's, I was informed the reason for their decision is because they were told the day of the incident report that the staff reported Phin rolled over and bumped his head, that she actually dropped him. She dropped my baby and lied about It! To say I was completely shocked is an understatement. After the conversation with this concerned parent, I called three different staff members to see if anyone else knew anything. After speaking with all three, one of them confirmed that staff person had, in fact, dropped my baby. The day of the incident when she came back from her lunch break, the staff told her that she dropped Phin. The good staff told the staff that dropped Phin she needed to let the acting manager know (which she did not), and she needed to write an incident report on exactly what happened. The incident report that I was given was a lie. I get that she didn't want to be in trouble, but mistakes happen and I should have been told the truth from the get go.
Once I found this information out I called several people/places.
September 27th I called a lawyer first and spoke about my options and just to really get some guidance on what I needed to do. Thank God my baby has/had no injuries. The day of the incident he had a small red bump on his head. After speaking to the lawyer, he said I wouldn't have a case to sue the daycare because there were no injuries which I was extremely thankful there were none. He did tell me I should call the state licensing department again and that I should now make a call to CPS. Which I did, both on the same day-September 27th.
September 28th I spoke with the local branch of CPS as they wanted to go physically see my baby as that is part of the process. They went to my mother in laws house to see him and make sure he was find.
October 12th It has now been 23 business days (I have not included weekends) since I made the first phone call to the state licensing department and I was told she would go out within that next week or two to do a walk through. Now, it has been 16 days since I called her again and gave her the new information of my baby being dropped and she still has not been there to do a walk through. It has now also been 16 days since I made the report to CPS and they have also not been to the daycare to investigate or talk to staff. At this point I am extremely disappointed that nothing has been done about this. People need to know what kind of daycare they are sending their kids to.
Sending my baby to daycare was extremely hard for me in the first place, then to know that this happened and no one seems to care is beyond me. I don't care what kind of relationships you have with people or friendships. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Don't sit there knowing something wrong happened and cover it up or not investigate it because you don't want your friend to get in trouble.
