Melanie is kinda, sweet, and loving. Her home is a fantastic place for children to play both indoors and outdoors. Her backyard backs into a city park and she lives on a cul de sac so on paper, it's near perfect.
That said, we had Melanie care for our 1 and 3 year old for over a year. Our youngest was bitten by the same child 6-7 times. Last week, our daughter was bitten again (through the shirt) but it broke the skin and we brought her in to prevent infection.
Since we had already sat down with Melanie (after bite #3 or #4), asked her to keep our child separate from the biter and since it had been over a years worth of biting incidents, it was time for the biter to go. Biting happens, I get that. But the normal response is to talk with the biter's parents and correct the behavior so eventually it stops. The biters parents refused to discipline their child and ultimately should not have chosen to be parents if they didn't want the responsibility of parenting.
Melanie ended up choosing her friendship with the biters parents over the safety of the children she cares for. For this reason alone, I give her one star. The single most important thing to me when selecting a child care provider is the safety of my children. If you cannot provide that, no matter how many fun art projects or activities you do, you are not fit to run a child care business.
