As a support to the Child Development Instruction program the laboratory was designed to continually incorporate innovative practices in early childhood education that both community members and researchers identify as exemplary, while remaining conscious of value and belief systems across class, race, ethnicity and culture. An advisory board of community members and college instructors, active in the Los Angeles county area of early childhood education, provide multiple perspectives and reduce barriers that traditionally prevent researchers and teachers from benefiting from one another's expertise.
At the heart of the integration between the laboratory school and the instruction program is the intentional construction of trusting relationships between the laboratory staff, instructors and the immediate stakeholders, the approximately 400 participants who are the families, children, and students of the Child Development Department.
